The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse 2019

★★★★½ Watched 24 Jan, 2020

If only I had watched this masterpiece last year, it would’ve been on my top 5 for sure. Directed by Robert Eggers, this is a horror/comedy/drama/thriller film that engrosses you in the movie unlike anything else I have ever seen.

It’s a completely surreal, out-of-body experience. According to me, the less appreciation and taste you have for cinema, the less you will like this movie because what is on display here is a story of just two characters stuck in a lighthouse, but somehow that seemingly basic premise is pushed to its absolute boundaries by Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. Cedric Diggory (that’s how I’ll always remember him) gives the performance of his career and his character arc and slow descent into madness is what makes this movie so special. Willem Defoe is magnificent in this movie and acts as a foil to Pattinson’s character. There are so many monologues and speeches in this movie that are all equally gripping and entertaining. Some of the interactions between the two characters are so wild and bizarre that you forget that this is a film and that these are actors. This was one of the most impressive and surreal films I’ve seen in a really long time, but I wouldn’t recommend this to everyone.
