If you think that the fact that Zodiac doesn’t have a clear-cut or satisfying ending is a reason to demerit the movie, then you don’t understand the point of it. Because it mirrors real life. There was no ‘ending’ per se. David Fincher is one of the most talented directors of all time. He doesn’t get enough praise, but I love every movie of his that I’ve seen. My favourite of his work is The Social Network. His ability to build suspense and create a mystery is mesmerising. I never found myself bored in any part of the 150 minute runtime. It changes genres and tones at the end of Act 2A and goes from a investigative movie (like Spotlight) to a character study of someone with an obsession (like Nightcrawler). This is easily one of Jake Gyllenhal’s best performanes. Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr. and Anthony Edwards are also phenomenal in their roles. It shows the way that an obsession can take over someone’s life and ruin it completely and this is one of the most interesting parts of the movie. My only issues with it were that it leaves certain plot-points too open-ended and doesn’t develop some of the crucial supporting cast members enough for the audience to develop any feelings towards them. I also feel like some of the things mentioned in white text at the end could’ve been shot for a slightly more dramatic ending but that would’ve padded an already lengthy run-time and maybe made this film less resonant so I’m not sure if that would’ve been the right choice. Nevertheless, this is one of the most interesting and well-made films I’ve seen in a while.
