Art vs. Entertainment

This boils down to one key question. What do you seek from movies? My mom gets annoyed when I recommend her some of these more ‘artsy’ movies cause she says she watches movies to switch her brain off and just enjoy herself. That’s probably why she enjoys hot garbage that has 6% on Rotten Tomatoes. There are some people who will never look at cinema as something more than a means of entertainment. But films can be so much more for a person. They can be a place where you find solace, where you find meaning, where you open your eyes to so many other perspectives. Cinema adapts your palate to an entire new realm of realities. It’s a beautiful combination of audio and visual entertainment. It’s so vast and expansive.

People that do not look past film as a temporary source of entertainment, will never see it as more than that. This is why so many gems go under the radar, especially if they are snubbed by The Academy. Look no further than 2019’s Uncut Gems for example, it’s a movie with Adam Sandler about basketball that has a Weeknd cameo in it and it’s on Netflix . No one is talking about it. It didn’t get a single Academy award nomination and therefore it didn’t reach the mainstream.

An average moviegoer doesn’t care about the cinematography, how beautiful the score is, how nuanced the actor’s performance is, how rich the dialogue is or how much attention to detail is there in a movie. This is why mediocre and bland, formulaic movies get made dime-a-dozen whereas legends like Martin Scorsese have to beg and grovel at Netflix’s feet to make their 3-and-a-half hour masterpieces.

On a slightly more hopeful note, 2019 marked an important change. As two huge franchises came to an end, there was a fire of originality that set Hollywood ablaze. Any of the 9 Best Picture nominees and so many underappreciated other films were truly deserving of that accolade (other than Joker) . From Parasite to Marriage Story to Jojo Rabbit there was so much versatility in the film industry.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, watch more great movies. Not just mediocre, entertaining drivel that’s made by huge studios. Watch those also, who doesn’t want to indulge in some sweet Marvel action or some epic Star Wars drama. But also watch more indie, more artsy and more intimate movies, because when you start watching those, your perspective changes. You’ll widen your horizons. You’ll be surprised what a movie can do to you emotionally. So what if there is no point to the movie? Not everything in life has a point, your life doesn’t have a character arc or a main story-line. Why expect it from cinema? After all, cinema is just a reflection of real life with a touch of movie magic. Don’t watch movies, experience them.
