I think Icarus is the best documentary I’ve ever watched. It’s groundbreaking, in its method of storytelling. It feels like a thriller or like a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster, but surprisingly its about real events. I was looking to watch a ‘sports documentary’ and I ended up watching one of the most eye-opening pieces of filmmaking which is a deep dive into the Russian doping scandal. This isn’t the impressive part though, it’s the amazing direction and storytelling of real events by director Bryan Fogel. He is one of the main characters of the movie and its evolution from something that seems to be a fun experimental sports documentary to a high-intensity masterpiece is quite exciting. The focal point of the film, Grigory Rodchenkov is also brilliant in his ‘performance’. It’s a very poetic and commentating film, which breaks the barriers and boundaries of documentary filmmaking. Go watch this one on Netflix, it won’t even feel like a documentary.
