As a film critic, I try my best not to read too many reviews before I watch a movie because I don’t want it to influence my opinion. However, as this was a Pixar film, I couldn’t escape the reviews and what all the reviews said was that this was some generic animated movie and that it was mediocre. I’m glad to say that they are wrong. It’s Pixar’s first original film since Coco and it’s amazing. I genuinely loved this movie. It’s such a breath of fresh air. It’s so charming and fun. Fun. It’s been so long since I’ve watched a movie that’s just as fun as this is. Tom Holland is one of my favourite actors and he is brilliant here. Even Dreyfuss and Octavia Spencer are amazing in this movie. The only weak point acting-wise is Chris Pratt, who I felt could have given a slightly more nuanced performance than he did. And this movie was ‘good’ for me until the last 15-ish minutes, but what they chose to do in the end, showed me that this was Pixar and not Dreamworks or Blue Sky or the hundreds of other animation studios. The ending is amazing, it’s beautiful. You’re somehow crying your eyes and still smiling ear-to-ear at the same time. It’s been so long since I’ve cried in a movie, but Onward did the trick. This is one of my favourite Pixar movies already. I loved Onward. You should definitely watch it!
