Jacques Tati, is supposedly one of the greatest French filmmakers of all time. When I was choosing which of his films to watch, I accidentally chose his last one. But I don’t regret it at all. Trafic is a delightful movie. It is beautiful to look at from the first shot to the last shot. And though it takes a while to pick up, once it does, it’s extremely entertaining. The ‘main’ character, Monsieur Hulot is played by Jacques Tati himself. The supporting cast is also extremely entertaining including this one American girl, who might be one of the most hilarious characters I’ve seen in a movie in a while. Trafic is extremely atmospheric in the way it sucks you into the films world. It’s a feeling that I’ve rarely felt. The shenanigans these characters get into throughout the film are hilarious. It’s a very funny film and uses physical comedy and situational humour in extremely effective ways. The sound editing and sound mixing are the most sophisticated I’ve seen in a film that had so little for a budget after Tati produced his masterpiece, Playtime (which I will get to soon) and entered financial ruin. The more I think about this film, the fonder it gets in my mind. This isn’t for everyone though, especially if you’re not experimental in your cinematic palate. Nevertheless, if you have even the slightest inkling towards cinema, then definitely check this out for a good time. It’s an extremely entertaining and nuanced comedy.
