I’ve watched two six-hour documentaries in the last 5 days and I was blown away by both. Cheer has some of the most incredible documentary filmmaking I’ve ever seen. I never thought I would be so interested in competitive cheerleading but it made me care a lot about something I had no interest in or idea about. That’s when you know a documentary is extremely effective. Just the personalities that you get to meet in this show are incredible. Each one of them has such a rich backstory that you feel emotionally attached to these people by the end of the six hours. By far the best character on the show is Monica, the cheer-team’s coach, she is such a strong and amazing person, just watching her handling things in itself is very interesting. But its greatest strength is also its greatest weakness. I feel like it romanticizes the characters’ backstory in exchange for some more insights into the world of Cheeer, which I felt dragged it a little bit. This could have easily been an hour or two shorter and still would be as compelling. I would still recommend this to literally anyone with 6 hours on their hands. It’s on Netflix, go check it out!
