What did I just watch? I don’t like Frozen II one bit. I don’t like at all. I love Frozen, so I’m not just a hater. I really wanted this to be a good movie. I gave it a chance. But it’s disappointing. I don’t think I can review this movie without spoiling it. Before I rant about how bad this is, I want to point out a few positives. This is a very gorgeous movie. It looks really really good. The color palate is so interesting. But that’s about it. Let’s get to the negatives now, cause boy, are there a lot of those!
First of all, Olaf is a disgrace in this movie, he’s just not funny anymore and gets on your nerves a lot. Most of the songs aren’t great or catchy in any way (other than Into The Unknown). But you’d be better off screaming ‘Into the Unknown’ from your balcony then watching this travesty. It’s so mediocre that it’s bad. It does nothing for this world. It reverses character development. Kristoff’s storyline is so ridiculous, somehow the Bohemian Rhapsody parody is the best part of his character arc. Anna decides that destroying a country is a viable option and consults no one before doing it. But obviously the biggest problem with the movie is Elsa. Her character arc is so weak and confusing. I think when they killed her, she should’ve stayed dead. It would make the movie so much more compelling. Let’s just analyze for a second, Elsa gives up her life to uncover the truth (which honestly should have been more satisfying rather than being a weak allegory for colonialism), and this leads Anna to ‘save’ the Enchanted Forest. This sacrifice is meaningful because Elsa gives up her life to save nature. It’s a beautiful message and would’ve patched up the rest of this movie. But no, alas Elsa and Olaf are magically resurrected and the Ice Queen returns on her Water Horse thingy and magically saves Arendelle. Nobody loses anything, nobody pays for the mistakes of their ancestors, no one sacrifices anything meaningful for the welfare of the people. No meaningful character development takes place. And this really disappoints me. This movie had SO MUCH potential. The teaser made it out to be a darker chapter and for moments it felt like it could’ve been but Disney chose the easy way out. I am disappointed in Frozen II. Elsa should’ve stayed dead.
