An Autopsy of Harry Potter 1 : Books 1 & 2 – Blast From the Past: Chapters 8 & 9

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

The Book

The sophomore effort in the Harry Potter world had a lot riding on it. It had to recapture the magic of the first one, while progressing the story, tone and maturity into the future. This book is significantly more logically consistent. The mystery aspect of the book is very entertaining. The chemistry and dynamics between the Golden Trio is also very well executed. It’s a very good book and a great sequel and the builds on its predesccor very effectively. I feel like CoS gets forgotten while discussing all these other great Harry Potter novels, but it is a quite good novel and is a worthy sequel to TPS.

The Film

The Chamber of Secrets is worse than i remembered it. It is a LONG movie, the longest Harry Potter movie in fact. This does hurt the film as it feels like Chris Columbus doesn’t know what fast-pacing means. The mystery in this film is actually really exciting. For some reason, I felt like the child acting was worse in this one. It used to be one of my favourite films in the series but I don’t think it is anymore. It’s still a great Harry Potter experience, don’t get me wrong. But I feel like it lacks that heart and charm that made the Philosopher’s Stone so great ever slightly. The CGI is significantly better, however, Dobby is not the most convincing effect. Overall, this is solid but has a lot of room for improvement.

I haven’t really ‘analysed’ any deeper themes or anything yet because I want to save that for the deeper books in the series. Before I move on to Prisoner of Azkaban, I’ll be reading Hank Green’s book. If you enjoy these book reviews, let me know. Thanks for reading this slightly unconventional review.
