Thor (2011) – Blast From the Past : Chapter 10

★★★½

Thor is a really fun movie! It has so much heart and wit that you find yourself getting lost in this world. Kenneth Branaugh (of Gilderoy Lockhart fame) directed this movie and his direction is frankly incredible. It’s a beautifully shot and composed film. You never get bored. It also breezes through, it’s short and very fast paced. Even the slower scenes are paced in such a way that it picks up really soon. Chris Hemsworth was an unknown kid off of Australia’s famous Home and Away when he came into this and the rest as they say, is history. But I think the real breakthrough performance in this film is Tom Hiddleston as Loki. He’s such a charismatic and energetic presence. He has complete command of your mind in every scene. Sir Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman and Idris Elba are all great in their respective roles as well. Thor goes into the movie a callous, reckless oaf and comes out a caring, humble god. It’s a beautiful story arc. But that’s also my main criticism for it. It lacks the action and thrill of a MCU movie. For most of it, he isn’t even Thor and as much as I loved the shenanigans, I would’ve still loved for this movie to be a little more action-packed and exciting. Also I felt like the writers should’ve committed to the story arc completely and fleshed out the transformation. But all thing considered, it’s still a great watch and a ‘worthy’ Phase One film.
