I forgot how great this movie is! Captain America: The First Avenger is genuinely one of the most enjoyable and charming film in Phase One of the MCU. Chris Evans as Steve Rogers is BRILLIANT! He’s so convincing and takes a character that isn’t supposed to work in theory and makes him so interesting and nuanced. His innocence and lack of experience is so well portrayed. I forgot Tommy Lee Jones is in this movie and he is great in it. By far, the best performance in The First Avenger is Hugo Weaving as Red Skull. It’s such a campy character and role that he brings so much passion to. This continues the trend of weak MCU villains that we see in characters like Ironmonger, Whiplash and Abomination. It’s a great performance but shallow villain in terms of depth and character motivation. Director of Jumanji and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Joe Johnston does a really good job of telling this story. My only complaint is that it’s very distinctly split into two halves which are very different in tone and tempo and that fact is probably aggravated by the fact that I watched it over two nights. It felt like I watched two different movies. Nevertheless, The First Avenger improved in my eyes upon my rewatch and it’s a great stepping stone for a lot of the payoff that comes later in the MCU.
