Iron Man 3 (2013) – Blast From the Past : Chapter 14

The fact that there isn’t really an ‘Iron Man’ for most of the movie is an interesting choice. It really pays off with some great character development in some parts and becomes a bit stretched out in some. It’s really confusing what tone this movie is going for because it’s all over the place. It tries to do too many things at once – Anxiety storyline, Extremis Storyline, Mandarin Storyline, Iron Patriot Storyline, Pepper Drama and it didn’t satisfyingly pull off any of the storylines. Personally I didn’t mind the Mandarin twist, and I thought it was quite clever. My main issue with the film is something that is not exactly the fault of the film but definitely detracts from the re-watching experience. The big ending of this film is never acknowledged after this anywhere in the MCU. This HUGE sacrifice that Tony makes is absent from Avengers 2 and beyond. In fact, the only thing indicating that this film is even MCU canon is the fact that Harley shows up at Tony’s funeral in Endgame. I feel like if this film had more of an impact on the MCU it would be more memorable and interesting. But unfortunately, it’s a fun movie that has no lasting consequences both on your mind and the further MCU.
