This film blew my mind. Constantly. It’s a very intriguing film from the get-go. The themes and topics it deals with are quite well established in the opening five minutes and the pace is relentless. You will not have a second to breathe in its 82-minute runtime. Its main pitfall also lies in that fact though. It doesn’t give enough time to explore any moment or contemplate anythings, it’s so quickly moving from one event to the next that you’re left confused especially during the second half. I had to read the Wikipedia article to make sense of what I was watching because this film is extremely subversive and misleading. There are a lot of positives though. I couldn’t find a Japanese copy of this film, so I watched the English dub and the performances are pretty decent for a dub. The writing is also pretty interesting and definitely witty. The main character is one of the most interesting I’ve seen because of how multi-faceted she is. The animation is gorgeous. The film is also very dense, it fits so many storylines that all interweave into a beautiful yet messy 82 minutes that manage to mesmerize you, confuse you and make you think about the film all at the same time which is hard to accomplish. It’s an excellent film in theory and it has everything it needs to be perfect but in my opinion 20 extra minutes would’ve done this film wonders.
