I can’t believe I hadn’t watched Dunkirk so far. After watching the first 30 minutes, I was ready to put my head down and go to sleep, because it was just boring and confusing. But my friend convinced me to give it another shot, so I restarted it and watched it again, this time with 100% of my attention and I have to say that this is one of the best war films I’ve ever watched. Christopher Nolan is amazing at what he does and the desperation of war that he captures is unlike anything I’ve seen before. It’s what films like 1917 wanted to capture but couldn’t. It’s the concentration of the events and the way the story is told that makes it so interesting. Nolan always messes with time, but he does it so well here where he uses it show the urgency of war and the realness of the situation. The non-linear structure isn’t a gimmick, it’s the medium of the story which makes it so interesting. The cinematography is gorgeous. I want a Dunkirk wallpaper as soon as possible because this film is a pleasure to look at. The score, my gosh, Hans Zimmer has outdone himself with the score and I’ll be listening to it for a long long time. It builds the tension so well and dictates the pace, especially in a film like this with such minimal dialogue. The acting is also incredible even though Harry Styles is literally just there to look pretty. I was ready to give this film a mediocre review when I finished watching it but I thought about it and read about it and listened to the score again and I realized that Dunkirk is amazing. I can’t pick any flaws in particular, all I’ll say is that the structure is a bit confusing at times and I had to re-orient myself a lot, but otherwise this is a pretty much perfect film.
