It’s been like six years since I’ve watched Gravity and let me just say, 10 year old me was DUMB. How did I find this film boring? It’s beautiful. Alfonso Cuaron is such an underrated director and this film shows why. This is a masterclass in filmmaking. From the stunning angles, to the symbolism, to the shot-framing, to the color palette, to the production design everything in this film is pristine. It’s calculated and made to a tee. Sandra Bullock gives one of her best performances in this film and carries the silence, It’s a 90 minutes that feels shorter and longer at the same time. It can be breathless and relentless at one moment and calm and composed in the next, which is what makes it so unique. The symbolism with relation to Christianity and all the umbilical cord allegories are all very interesting and I really enjoyed finding bits and pieces throughout the film. My main complaint is that Bullock’s character is a bit one-dimensional and annoying at times but thankfully for the majority of the film, there is a nuance to her character and her decisions. I’m glad I re-watched this cause I’ve changed my opinion on it 100%. This film is a cinematic gem.
