I wish I could take off even half a star to appear more ‘critical’ or seem more serious but I can’t discern a single flaw in this ten-hour masterpiece. It’s very rare that I have come across a show that is so consistent. Consistently well-written, knocking it out of the park with its balance of humor and drama. Each line is like a symphony and the story is unpredictable. The characters are so well fleshed out and complex that it is very hard to side with any one character on the show (ignoring the fact that every character is the most terrible person in the universe in their own way,. which is a weird reflection of humanity). It’s consistent in the way it handles real word topics and themes from wealth inequality to infidelity to media bias to chemical dependence and so many other topics that you’re always thinking about the show even when you’re not watching it. Which i find is very rare because you usually like to watch something to take your mind off of what you’re doing but Succession has a weird habit of sticking in your mind, nagging you, you think a hundred times about who was right and I’ve never felt this way before other than with BoJack Horseman (which is my favourite show). It’s consistent with its amazing performances from the brilliant cast. Brian Cox as Logan Roy brings this gravitas and anger that is so rare nowadays in television. Jeremy Strong as Kendall Roy, brings this incredible naivety and yet manages to pull off ambition in his role as he gives what is one of the best television performances ever. Kieran Culkin is simply amazing as the eccentric Roman Roy with this character quirks and weird behavior balanced with a certain nuanced maturity makes him a very intriguing character. To be fair every single actor in this show absolutely kills it in their respective role whether it’s Hiam Abbas, Nicholas Braun, Matthew Macfayden or pretty much anyone else. It’s consistent with its magnificent score by Nicholas Britell that I find myself playing all the time nowadays, especially that brilliant theme song. Each episode I watch, I find Succession creeping it’s way up my top 5 and I simply can’t wait to get started on Season 2 cause all the reviews say it’s even better. I rarely say this but I implore each and every person to watch this show and find something because it really is nothing short of a masterpiece.
