I’m glad I have a friend who brings up Edgar Wright’s work a lot or else I don’t know when I would have watched this film. I’m really happy I did because it was 100 minutes of pure fun. Edgar Wright is a genius in the way he combines comedy and character development in this altogether well-known premise that he subverts using absurdity. The screenplay is full of comedic callbacks that serve a dramatic purpose later in the film. For a film this funny, I didn’t expect it to have so much heart and genuinely touching emotional moments. It’s also the perfect length and doesn’t stretch the concept too far, making it an entertaining watch the entire runtime. Simon Pegg is delightful and his writing and acting are really what elevate this film to a higher level than mere parody. The zombie apocalypse element of the film is the most interesting and it’s handled with a deft touch. The dry British humor and the self-absorbed nature of the characters who don’t see what’s happening under their own noses is an interesting mirror held to contemporary British society which works satirically and directly, quite well. I think SotD stands alone as one of the best comedies I’ve ever watched and makes me very excited to finish the Cornetto trilogy and check out Wright’s other work.
