Underwhelmed. I think that’s the best word for me to describe this film. When the entire world tells you that this is the greatest thing since Citizen Kane and all you hear is amazing things, you end up setting your expectations really really high. Sadly, this film didn’t reach that expectation. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great film, it’s just that I did not enjoy it as much as I was expected to. I am a humongous fan of Whiplash and so that also raised my expectations because that’s a nearly flawless film. Anyways, this is still one of the most vibrant films I’ve ever watched. In tone, cinematography, energy everything is so popping and unique. The music is genuinely so catchy and I feel like I’ll be listening to it for a long time. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are perfect in this film and their performances are extremely nuanced. Damian Chazelle does a good job with the direction and the writing is really clever. I particularly love the depiction of LA, rather than glorifying it, he portrays all the ugly nooks and crannies of the city which really enhances the experience. For me, my main criticism is that it feels like its really building up to something and then it all fizzles out and the ending felt like a cop-out for me personally. I know I’m gonna get a lot of flak for this review but this is honestly what I think.
