Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

Plot Summary – A comedic send-up of the grim circumstances of the Middle Ages as told through the story of King Arthur and framed by a modern-day murder investigation. When the mythical king of the Britons leads his knights on a quest for the Holy Grail, they face a wide array of horrors, including a persistent Black Knight, a three-headed giant, a cadre of shrubbery-challenged knights, the perilous Castle Anthrax, a killer rabbit, a house of virgins, and a handful of rude Frenchmen.

It’s amazing that this film isn’t from 2020 or something because the humor is almost nailed-on and funny even to this day, 45 years later. I think that’s the brilliance of Monty Python. Their humor is timeless. I had watched one of their ‘compilation’ type films in “And Now For Something Completely Different” and I had laughed so much that I was very excited for this and it exceeded my expectations. From minute one, this film is hysterical. I’ve been watching a lot of sketch comedy lately and you can see the origin of almost every trope in this 90-minute thrill-ride. The writing is brilliant, it’s laugh-out-loud funny while being very clever at the same time. They make stupid fart and poop jokes and simultaneously make deep commentaries about monarchy and democracy in medieval times and yet both are incredibly effective. The acting is unparalleled and this has some of the best comedic performances I’ve ever seen. All in all, I would say that this is one of the all-time greatest comedies if not the greatest. I thoughroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to everyone.
