Feels Good Man is the first film I’ve seen that perfectly captures the internet era since Searching but in a very different way. Internet and meme culture has become so ingrained in our lives that we can forget that most people do not understand this world and are alienated by it. This is the perfect entry-point into meme culture for someone who doesn’t know anything about memes. On the surface, this is just a documentary about Pepe and his creator. About the legal battles and the separation of art from the artist when the art becomes a political monster. But when you look deeper into the film, it’s really an exploration of the psychology of hate culture and how the alt-right came to be. It’s an exploration of the sheer absurdity of the whole thing and yet how it has such a deep impact. This is what films like The Social Dilemna are trying to be but fail so miserably because they fail to explore what the mentality of the people are and instead attack faceless corporations. There is something somewhat poetic in this film and I found it to be an extremely therapeutic watch. My only issue is that it could have gone a bit deeper and really turned into an era-defining film but it achieves a lot in its 90 minutes and it has a lot of merits. I recommend this to everyone, it’s an important lesson.
