Please don’t watch this movie if you’re thirsty. I really enjoyed this film. It’s different from any animated film I’ve ever watch, actually it’s very different from most films I’ve watched in general. I really enjoyed the style of this film. It’s so visually interesting and unique that you are always engaged even if you aren’t completely interested in the story. The score by Hans Zimmer is so captivating and just completely absorbs you into the aura of the film. Johnny Depp is so talented and it shows in this film where he gives one of the most nuanced and complex voice performances I’ve heard. I honestly can’t believe this was supposed to be a children’s film because it’s so deep in metaphor and it’s so unique that any adult would enjoy it and I feel like some kids may find it boring. There’s something technically so masterful about this film that kids just won’t be able to appreciate and that’s why branding it as a ‘kids’ movie’ detracts from its merit a lot. It’s not even like a Pixar film where its made for kids but has artistic value to be appreciated by adults, Rango seems almost entirely made for adults. The character design is just so so awe-inspiring and anyone interested in animation needs to treat this film as a masterclass. Even almost 10 years later, this is some of the best animation I’ve seen put to film. Although I have so much praise for it, it’s still not a very interesting movie plot-wise. There’s a great character arc and a lot of metaphor about identity but it still feels a bit empty in the character and story department and could have used better writing and structure. The jokes land really well and carry a lot of the film’s dead weight. Overall, I would suggest this to anyone looking for a quick, good time!
