The History of the Seattle Mariners (2020)

Summary – Every team has its highs and lows, frustration, heartbreak, greatness and confusion, but no other team is like this one. The Seattle Mariners are eminently lovable, profoundly human and stunningly, outrageously weird. There is no more fascinating team across the entire history of American sports.

This joins the ranks of All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur as my favourite sports documentary of all time. In 3hrs and 40 minutes, John Bois does something remarkable. He makes you care about a sports team using charts and images. I know very little about baseball and I’m not very interested in it but somehow Bois manages to make me feel so much for this team. His narration fleshes out the characters like Ken Griffeth Jr., Ichiro Suzuki and so many others so well that you’ll feel like you’ve experienced these players’ entire careers yourself. As an RCB fan, I’m no stranger to sports teams that never won a title but have so much fan love and passion behind them and you can really experience that. It also made me so interested in baseball which I never thought I would be three days ago when I started this series after seeing it’s high rank on Letterboxd. It’s available on YouTube and I think any sports fan should make sure they check this one out!
