Avengers: Age of Ultron is super underrated. I didn’t expect that this film will improve so much in my mind, rewatching it after so long. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely adored it when it first came out and got the Blu-Ray (my first) when it released on BluRay that year. It’s also the film that made me the MCU geek I am today and I’ll always have fond memories of it. But somewhere in my obnoxious film buff phase, I thought it would be ‘cool’ to give this three stars. But upon rewatching it with a little more maturity and much more ability to let go and have fun while watching a film, I realize that Age of Ultron is a great film. Technically, it’s not the most brilliant film but that shouldn’t matter. Does it achieve what it’s trying to achieve? I would say yes, and so much more. Whedon’s last imprint on the MCU is a lasting one and its repercussions are felt to this day. Whether it’s the introduction of characters like Wanda and The Vision or getting our first hint at Wakanda, this film had so much on it’s shoulders as did Whedon and I think the product is an imperfect masterpiece. In its brokenness, there is so much merit. And it’s a really fun time but it also isn’t afraid to ask so many moral questions about our characters. I really think this is the mid-point of the Infinity Saga from a story point. Or maybe this is just nostalgia speaking, I’m not sure, but I love Age of Ultron. I love that each character is balanced and gets the right amount of development. I love that the action is so well-balanced. I love James Spader as Ultron. I love how they introduced Vision. I love that the ending is not perfect and it sets up Phase 3 in a brilliant way. I love that scene when they’re all fighting and it looks like a Renaissance painting. This film isn’t perfect but who ever said the enjoyment of art is in its perfection?
