This was my favourite MCU film since the day I went into theatres and watched it 5 years ago. Upon rewatch for what must be the tenth time, this is still my favourite MCU film, and I’d like to try and justify why. This was the first time the MCU asked this many moral questions but this wasn’t a boring, pretentious philosophical movie by any means. It’s 150 minutes of fun and entertaining cinema but it gives so much depth to even minor characters. There are so many scenes etched in my mind that would be considered art if these characters weren’t wearing costumes. Unlike what I said for Age of Ultron, this film isn’t beautiful because of it’s imperfections, this film is a masterpiece. It’s almost perfect at everything it does. The consequences this film still has on the MCU today is mind-blowing. The development of Captain America’s character is the most pronounced and important in this film. The Russo brothers made the technically best MCU film with The Winter Soldier but they made the most complete with Civil War. The score is so gripping as Henry Jackman engulfs you in this conflict. Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans are simply phenomenal. This was the introduction of the late Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther who would go on to be such a cultural landmark. This was the introduction of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker who is one one of my favourite character-actor combinations in cinema. The airport scene will always be memorable but it isn’t the best. No, the best scenes in Civil War are the quiet ones, the contemplative ones, the ones where the weight of this universe start to weigh on these characters. Zemo is my favourite MCU villain after Thanos, Loki and The Vulture. The way he executes his plan is so cold-blooded and ruthless and he accomplishes his goal without ever fighting one of the Avengers. I can’t wait to see what he has to offer in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier show coming up. I can’t find a single flaw in this film and you’d be hard-pressed to find one too. Watch it from the perspective of an MCU fan not a film critic and you’ll appreciate it so much more.
