I was genuinely caught off-guard by how much I loved this movie. I just started watching The OC last month and immediately fell in love with Adam Brody’s charisma and acting ability and I was really glad to see he got a lead role. This is such a fun and entertaining movie but it’s not afraid to go beyond the surface and explore the effects of these character’s rich pasts on their current predicament. Director Evan Morgan does a great job balancing the humor, action, mystery and darker underlying themes of this film while delivering a great watch. Adam Brody gives an incredibly nuanced performance that could have been easily messed up by a lesser actor. Sophie Nelisse is also incredibly charming and her performance drives a lot of the film forward. The cinematography and other technical aspects are nothing to write home about however the score is quite engrossing and fitting for the themes of the film. What makes a film great isn’t how good it is from a purely objective and technical level but how it delivers on what it sets out to achieve and on that rubric, The Kid Detective is nearly flawless
