An Analysis of Grief through Wandavision
Grief – The way grief is explored throughout Wandavision is so unique. We start in Episodes 1 and 2 with denial. Everything is through these rose-tinted glasses and we see that Wanda and Vision are happy but we know that Vision dead so there’s a sense of uncomfortability with everything that’s happening. In addition to this, we see that Wanda rewinds and changes things whenever Vision gets suspicious. Yet again confirming that she is still in denial of this fantasy world she has created. As we get to the third and fifth episode, we enter the second stage of grief, anger. We see how she lashes out at Hayward and Monica and becomes confrontational. The villainous side of her begins to show and she even uses this anger against Vision himself. As we reach the end of episode 5 and enter episode 6, Wanda starts rationalising the moral implications and enters the third stage, ‘BARGAINING’. We see this as she is confronted by Evan Peters’ (hilarious stunt by Marvel btw) Fietro and Monica. We see her slowly realize that she needs to move on. In episodes 7 and 8 we enter the phase of Depression. As she realizes that things will be lost and she will eventually have to return to reality she stays moping around the house and we see Agatha get to her in this vulnerable moment. Finally, she enters the final phase of ‘Acceptance’ in the finale. She says bye to her kids and finally to Vision and this dreamscape she’s created. This is a great exploration of grief and her character arc is so touching and gut-wrenching.
PS – Vision’s dialogue with White Vision is some of the best writing I’ve seen in a Marvel property ever and I AM LIVING FOR JIMMY WOO!
