What a brilliant film. I was recommended this film by my friend and I’m so glad I watched it all in one night instead of my usual two-day film schedule cause that made the impact so much better. I remember that for almost 30 minutes after watching the film I could barely string together sentences because the film had captured me into this deep trance and I felt like I was still in the movie after I had finished watching it. I think the benchmark for me that separates a great film from one of my favourites is how long I think about it and how long it stays with me after watching it. It’s almost fresh in my mind and if I close my eyes even after such an eventful day, I can feel all the emotions I felt throughout the runtime of this film, rush through me all over again. Director Shinkai helms the film in such a brilliant way and you can tell that he loves the art-form with his hyper-realistic animation that had me with my jaw glued to the floor at some of the landscapes created. The visual language is so rich that so much is implied and explained without a single line of dialogue. It’s also really good with how it handles pacing and tone. It never feels overwhelming with any emotional and has a perfect balance of light-heartedness and this underlying melancholy that runs through the film which is what makes it such an entertaining watch. The climax nearly had me in tears which is an accomplishment cause I rarely get emotional during films. Your Name is a masterpiece and I think it’s a must watch for everyone!
