I expected so much more from Marvel after Endgame. I thought that we would be exploring new ideas, new themes and break away from the formula that was so strictly followed in the last 13 years of cinema. The TV shows are doing that, each one is such a unique and different take on the Marvel IP that it’s based on. Sadly, I cannot say the same about Black Widow. I hate that this wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be for so many reasons. Firstly, I just find it hard to say anything negative about MCU films and secondly, I love the character and I really really wanted to see a well-made Black Widow film but this, this is just not it. I really liked the acting. Scarlett Johannsen and David Harbour were really good in their roles but obviously, the scene-stealer was Florence Pugh. Not only was she extremely attractive throughout the film, but she also gave a great performance and brought a lot of charm and grace to an underwritten character. The villain was so poorly set up that I was shocked at how clumsily they handled it. The actions scenes also weren’t very fun and they looked animated at times. The CGI was terrible in some scenes and it looked like I watching gameplay from a PS4 video game. I thought that the lighting and colour palette of the film was very unique and a departure from the generic grey tint of the MCU. They kept describing the Budapest mission with Hawkeye and that would have been a much better and cooler film than what we ended up getting. The end-credit scene was really interesting and I’m excited to see what’s coming next on that front. I would only recommend this film to you if you’re a Marvel fan, otherwise, this is wholly skippable filler.
