It’s a Monday night, it’s raining outside. I was having a bad day so I put on Ted Lasso and scrolled through Discord cause both Instagram and WhatsApp were down and all my Indian friends were probably asleep. On the UMass Film Discussion Discord server, they were talking about this film and just for fun, I asked them where they were watching it and they told me that it’s screening in our local indie theatre. I checked the timings and was thinking when I’d be free this week to go down and watch it. I decided to go on Wednesday or Friday and went back to watching TL. But I saw the time and if I got my stuff together, in 40 minutes I’d make it to the 7:20 screening. I didn’t even bother changing and went in my t-shirt and Cheetos-themed pajamas, running in the rain with my umbrella as I saw the bus approach the stop. I quickly got down in downtown Amherst and went to the cinema just in time to sit and watch the film.

I’m giving this much prelude cause I had such an adventure just getting to this film and I was really hoping that it was worth it. I did not expect this film to change my life. In its 108-minute runtime, it achieves something so few films manage to do nowadays. It managed to be original. I can tell you without a doubt I have never seen anything like this film in my life. I don’t think I can tell you what it’s about if I tried. This film was an out-of-body experience. I’ve never clutched my stomach laughing this hard while having tears in my eyes while cringing at the sheer graphic nature of the film. Every single emotion you can feel, you will feel. This film is not for the faint of heart because it will test you. Someone puked in our theatre and a couple walked out. It was the kind of film that just gets under your skin, something that can startle and disturb even the most stoic viewer. Everything is so meticulously crafted to make you feel something. The sound design makes these physical scenes so visceral. The lighting and cinematography keep changing the perspective of the story. The writing is so good that it leaves you always questioning whether to scream or laugh or cry. The performances, holy shit, the performances are just out of this world. I highly doubt anything else I watch this year will top this film but I don’t think I can ever watch it again. I’d break. This film genuinely changed me on the inside. It really made me believe that each person has their own vision and that if you have an idea in your mind, you can execute it if you put your mind to it. This is already an all-time favourite for me because it shows that if you care about the art that you make and put this much attention to detail, you get rewarded with something so beautiful. A lot of people won’t like this movie, some will quit, some will nauseate but if you take the time to appreciate this film for what it is. Then you will be gifted a masterpiece in every sense of the word. Experience Titane the first chance that you get because it’s something truly different and unique in this world of photocopies and imitations.
