There are bad movies, and then there are movies where you wonder how it exists. How did it go past hundreds of screenings and media executives? How did no one stop the creators and speak some sense into them? How did these actors all agree to follow this madness of a vision? Who told anyone this was a good idea? Everything about this film baffles me as to how it exists and I’m genuinely surprised to see that ‘critics’ liked this film cause I went to a nearly full theatre and everyone around me were either –
A) Asleep
B) Laughing their ass off at the most dramatic scenes cause they couldn’t believe how cringe-inducing and funny it was
C) Just staring confusedly at the screen or their phone
I am not exaggerating. I spoke to a few people who came out of the film and I didn’t meet a single person who thought it was good. That being said, I had an incredible time laughing at how bad it was. The decision to give all these brilliant actors an Italian accent made it so that even the most eloquent dialogue sounded like it was written for an SNL sketch. Every single performance seemed like a parody or a caricature. I thought Lady Gaga was especially bad in this film where she ridiculously overacts to a point where you’re wondering whether this film is meant to be taken seriously or not. I remember turning over to these two girls sitting next to me and there were tears in their eyes from how hard they were laughing at what was supposed to be a really powerful moment for Gaga’s character. Jared Leto continues to show us his slow descent into madness as every time he opens his mouth you can’t help but feel that this is his first time acting. This film somehow manages to make even Adam Driver and Al Pacino, two of my favourite actors EVER, seem mediocre at best and caricatures of themselves at worst and I think that this is because of a combination of silly directing choices and a very poorly written script that gives these larger-than-life characters absolutely ridiculous dialogue which you can never imagine a real person saying. The only reason I gave this a star is because I was entertained for most of it, just not for the right reasons. There is a bit in the beginning though where I felt myself dozing off and had to pull myself back into reality. I just don’t understand how or why this film was made and I think that people should watch it to understand how not to make films.
