Yeah, I’m a sucker for this kind of movie. I feel like sometimes while watching a movie, I forget to have fun and this was a film where I really had a lot of fun. I was smiling and laughing and texting my friend about it the whole time. Does it do anything mind-bending with the camera? No. Does it have a crazy narrative structure? No. Do those things always matter? Not really. I think that sometimes a film comes along that’s just an unbridled good time. I know that’s not really a nuanced critique but sometimes, screw nuance, give me an in-your-face feel-good film like this. There is plenty of subtlety, very often I found myself caught by surprise as to the direction the writers went in. The way it handles its themes of feminism and the ‘generational divide’ usually impressed me with its take. I am glad to see older people represented in such a positive light. That’s something you rarely see in film nowadays. The acting from both leads is brilliant, I think that Anne Hathway pulls it off completely as this tech CEO. This is Robert de Niro’s film through and through, I have never seen him give a warm, fuzzy performance like this. Usually, he’s a very held-back actor who portrays his emotions with the subtlest of tone changes or expression shifts, but here he really lets go allowing his character to feel truly unique. He’s like someone you want to hug and just talk to for hours. You see he’s not perfect and there’s genuine emotional conflict and although you know everything will wrap up neatly in the end, it’s still a very entertaining journey. I really liked how they didn’t go for a disgusting romantic angle between these two characters and kept it so wholesome throughout. I was smiling and having a great time throughout. The perfect feel-good movie!
