I have both my finals tomorrow and then I fly back to India day after and I still chose to go and watch this in theatres, I’m so glad I did. This was my favourite film of 2021, if not one of my all-time Top 5 films. I don’t think it’ll work for everyone but it’s just the perfect, outrageous chuckle-fest that I think we need this year. Almost everything is so masterfully done but like in the most fun and random way, this isn’t trying to be some prestige film that you can sit and analyze for hours, it’s just 2 and a half hours of unrelenting fun. Unlike House of Gucci, I was actually laughing the whole time because the director intended me to. The script is so good, each line is a zinger and this is probably one of the best comedies I’ve ever watched. Imagine Succession dialled up by a 100, if that sounds appealing to you, then this is your film. If you can sometimes get tired of that style then this film definitely won’t be for you. Thankfully, I’m a Succession megafan and this film was such a delight to watch. The casting is absolutely perfect and yet almost none of the actors play to their type. Leonardo DiCaprio is phenomenal as usual. Jennifer Lawrence, Timothee Chalamet and Jonah Hill are wonderful as well. My favourite performance is that of Meryl Streep who’s having so much fun in this film. Ariana Grande steals every second that she’s on-screen and her song is probably one of the funniest moments in film this year. While being incredibly funny, it also packs its punch in terms of political satire. I think McKay has made a brilliant trilogy with The Big Short, Vice and now this. The commentary is so relevant and just the way it handles so many topics makes you laugh and yet deeply connect to the underlying message and themes. It can be ham-fisted at times but I think that’s the point. There are still going to be people who misinterpret this film but overall I think it does a great job handling its themes. The score is amazing. Nicholas Britell is a genius and literally from the first scene, my feet were constantly tapping towards the beat of the score. He is a master of incorporating hip-hop beats and these amazing orchestras, and now he adds so many layers to that to make a soundtrack that frankly stands on its own. I cannot wait for this to release on Netflix and for all of you to check it out. I can assure you, you’ll have an amazing time!
