I can’t feel my throat. I screamed so hard so many times during this film. My friend Rudrangsh said it best that “This was the film 2021 needed.” This year has been hard on a lot of us, this film is that rush of dopamine and pure joy that this year so desperately needed. It’s funny how I’ve deemed the last two films I watched in theatres to be the film of the year but I do really think that this is my favourite movie of the year. Yes, by conventional movie criticism standards, this may not match up with the brilliance of Titane or the satire of Don’t Look Up, but this made me feel so elated and ecstatic throughout. I giggled and laughed and cheered and choked up, it was a rollercoaster of emotion, spectacle and enjoyment. So what if it’s an amusement park ride, those are meant to be fun and give you thrills you don’t get in real life. This is probably my best ever theatre experience, the atmosphere was through the roof. We really had an amazing crowd who would get up and cheer for every epic moment, for every character who gets introduced, and this made me so giddy as I screamed my heart out for some moments. Fan service is different from what this film does, this was pure respect and homage and just nostalgia. Maybe if I was a cynical 40-year old I wouldn’t enjoy this film but I grew up with all three Spider-Men and Spider-Man is my favourite fictional character, period. This is the MCU at its very very best, building on stuff from the past while thoroughly entertaining you and leaving you thirsty for the future. The first introduction of Spider-Tom was in Civil War and that was my favourite MCU movie, until now. This is simply phenomenal. I could talk about the score or the brilliant performance by Tom Holland or how Willem Defo steals the show but that’s all for another day cause all I can talk about when I describe this film is how much I smiled, cheered and had an amazing time. Nice Goodfellas reference as well, stick it to Marty. This is cinema.
