Every so often I watch a movie that’s been extremely hyped for me by one or more people and I always go with a sense of nervousness cause I really want to like it. This was such an experience and for the first thirty minutes, I felt this pressure more than ever as I was confused and yet enthralled. The ‘prologue’ and first chapter of the film are kind of slow and contemplative but they are probably the most artistic portions of the film. From the cinematography to the writing, everything in the first act is beautifully crafted. The score also leaves you in this trance and while you can get bored at times, the film never leaves you parched for amazing visuals and technique. Then the film shifts gears in one pivotal scene and what follows is probably one of the best revenge movies I have ever watched. As the second and third act plays out, you understand how important the themes and metaphors set up in the first act are and it becomes an absolute delight. This is easily the best action I’ve seen in a film. It’s so raw and unhinged yet handled with so much care. Even the action is filled with deep meaning and metaphor. No movement is unchoreographed and no dialogue is misplaced. The film adds another element to the mix at the midpoint which makes the protagonist’s attitude get challenged and refreshes the plot. Despite this being one of the best action movies I’ve watched, the quiet and contemplative scenes are the ones that steal the show and so much is conveyed through the dialogue from both the text and the subtext. Imagine if you combined John Wick and Logan and then made it arthouse, that’s the best way I can describe this film and even that doesn’t do it justice. The climax of the film is also absolutely brilliant and takes you by complete surprise. This film can be a contemplative mind-teaser at times and a crowd-pleasing heartwarmer at others but it never ceases to be an absolute feat of filmmaking. I highly highly recommend this masterpiece. Thank you Anna.
