The movie abruptly cut out a bunch of times during our screening and then they said that they couldn’t screen the movie about halfway in and I was pretty bummed cause I was having a great time. On my way back to my dorm I just couldn’t get the film out of my head so I logged on to the Sundance website and downloaded the movie cause I couldn’t wait months to find out how it ends. I’m so glad I did cause if the first half is a good, entertaining watch then the second half is an anxiety-inducing, gut-wrenching roller coaster ride. I was completely enthralled by the entire package. The cinematography was amazing and some of the shots were simply amazing. I love how all the parties were lit, it’s so easy to do the default Euphoria look but they really went with something unique here. RJ Cyler and Sebastian Chacon are amazing in their roles but Donald Elise Watkins is the revelation for me in this film. He is simply phenomenal. He portrays the protagonist with so much heart and just pure innocence that when the hard parts of the film hit, you feel it with him. Sabrina Carpenter was a bit weak in her role but it didn’t distract because the rest of the film was so brilliant. KD Davilla’s script is magic, some of his observations and anecdotes that he incorporates are hilarious and scary at the same time. He manages to bring comedy in irony and the dialogue is so fun. Carey Riley helms the film brilliantly and manages to control the pace masterfully. The tempo of the music is matched with the heartbeat of the characters which is a brilliant touch. The score and soundtrack were both so well-crafted in this film and immerse you in the atmosphere so effectively. The film is really effective with its message and the moments that should hit hard but what I really admire is the hidden theme of the film that builds throughout the film and culminates in this really beautiful scene in the end in which I almost teared up while grinning like an idiot. The last fifteen minutes of the film are genius in their own way and the ending is perfectly haunting. I had an amazing time with Emergency and I highly recommend that people watch it once it comes out on Amazon!
