Oh my god. It really lives up to its title in every way. I had been looking forward to this film for a while after seeing nothing but good press about it but I didn’t expect to fall in love with it as hard as I ended up doing. This is full use of genre and concept. If you make a multiverse movie, you make it this or don’t bother making one at all. I have no idea what’s gonna top this movie in 2022 because it was absolutely perfect. It had the perfect blend of humour, action, science-fiction craziness, heart, amazing writing, and stunning visuals. It’s literally everything good about cinema packed into one overwhelming experience. I was just frozen for the entire third act other than to let out the occasional chuckle because I couldn’t believe that they made a movie like this. This is complete use of the visual medium. This is the reason why I think that movies should exist. I feel like whether this gets the award to love it deserves or not, culturally this will be a huge milestone. Just like Parasite was, but for sci-fi. How long has it been since we got a really good science fiction movie that’s not related to any IP but is also fun enough that a mainstream audience can appreciate? The writing is phenomenal. Although half the movie is in Mandarin, you never feel like you’re not 100% connecting to every word the characters say. Literally, everyone in the film gives a jaw-dropping performance, to single any of them out would be discrediting the others which I really don’t think is warranted because every actor brings their absolute A-game. There were some bits in the movie that had me laughing really loudly and obnoxiously in a theatre full of people but I did not care because it was just that funny to me and I really appreciated that this film was not afraid to be funny. It was also really sweet and touching though altogether, it never feels dishonest or insincere because in the end the message rings true and wraps the entire film up into a nice little bagel. I’m also really glad I got to watch this in theatres because it was a really fun experience watching it in a room full of people who love film deeply (shoutout UMFD) and just collectively reacting to this absolute delight of a film. I highly highly highly recommend this film which is already in my all-time favourites.
