I tried really hard to find an excuse not to give this five stars cause that feels like the easy option but I really did have a fantastic time with this movie. They rarely make movies like this anymore and I really want to define what I mean by that. This might be based on existing IP, but it does it in a completely different way. It may have its moments of poking you for nostalgia but mostly it’s a really sincere and loving tribute to the original and an honest-to-the-heart sequel. It’s a film about aging and catching up with time, and it really feels like it cares about telling that story. Everything in the story is in service to that. Hans Zimmer’s score is absolutely amazing. I was completely immersed in the film throughout. I got the unique chance to watch the film in 4DX and the action scenes felt absolutely insane. I had an amazing time and it really felt like I was in those planes with the cast. Talking about the cast, Tom Cruise brings his A-game as usual and John Hamm and Val Kilmer are great as well, but the standout for me is Miles Teller. His portrayal of Rooster was so convincing and he delivered an equally light-hearted and emotionally satisfying performance while looking amazing the whole time. He looks so convincing as Goose’s son that you never have to suspend disbelief to believe his relationship with Maverick. The cinematography is another thing I’d like to highlight that blew me away. It was an absolutely gorgeous movie to look at. Most of all, it strung me along like an upper making me feel every emotion it wanted me to feel. I haven’t felt a film be so in-control of me in a long time. The third act is one of the best I have ever seen and I’m just so glad this movie exists. Please go and check it out in theatres, you will not regret it!
