I think Marvel fatigue has finally hit me. I had pretty high expectations to be fair, but who wouldn’t from a Taika film that’s a sequel to something that was incredibly refreshing and fun? Thor: Love and Thunder seems like a poor imitation of Ragnarok. While the previous film was a hard reboot on the character that didn’t give him the self-importance that he wanted but made him look cool as hell in the end, this one feels like it’s driving on the same road without doing anything new. The jokes were good but nothing I haven’t seen done better in other movies (even just Taika movies). The plot was good but not even remotely original. The soundtrack was fun but it’s already been done. The visuals were beautiful and did win me over a lot. The performances were also solid for the most part and most actors did the best they could with the cheesy script. The emotional core of the film is what fell flat and didn’t land. Surely if you’re gonna base a film on the romance between two characters, then you should ensure that they have chemistry. Sadly, Jane and Thor don’t even feel like friends, much less lovers. I was really impressed with Christian Bale’s performance, even though I didn’t feel that his character was that compelling or well-motivated, he certainly commits to the bit. Overall, I was quite underwhelmed. Perhaps, this is not another sign that I need to lower my expectations before going into MCU properties but for some reason that notion makes me feel bad. If you’re a big Thor fan, you can go watch this but if you’re a casual then I’d suggest you wait for this one to come out on streaming.
