I don’t get why people’s tolerance for bad filmmaking, writing, and planning goes out of the window when Marvel has their logo before the movie. The first twenty minutes were actually promising, they were funny, they had personal stakes and they made you care about the characters. Then they went into the quantum realm and what followed was some of the most nonsensical and random moments I’ve seen in a movie theater. It feels like there are no choices that were made in this movie. Chat-GPT or a similar conglomerate of corporate interests and ideas came and started shooting ideas on the screen and without filtering or vetting, they were approved and made into a movie. I find it extremely hard to believe that this was the artistic intent of a human being with critical thought. It felt like they trapped Peyton Reed in a cage and had a robot come in and direct the movie. The action scenes are nonsensical. The editing is so afraid to let you see anything for more than one second. The cinematography is so scared of making you see the flaws in the CGI that it takes the most boring and close-up shots of everything. The writing is laughable, when half your lines are exposition and the other half are poorly-written jokes you take away anything tangible from the movie. Trillions of lives are not interesting stakes either. Mindlessly increasing the number of people whose lives are in the balance doesn’t make it more interesting because there has been no effort in making us care about any of those lives. The only reason I gave this movie 1 star is that there’s a character that is so ridiculous in this movie that I laughed from the first time they showed up to their final utterance. That character saved this movie from being unwatchable because of how absurd their presence was. Kang is not an interesting villain. You cannot tell us to care about him without giving a reason. Why is he so power-hungry? Why does he want to be a conquerer? What made him that way? None of this answered leaving us with a caricature of a real villain. Johnathan Majors is too good of an actor to be playing a villain this weak. I was so disappointed in this movie, and I genuinely would not recommend this to anyone. I am really sad that a universe and series that brought me so much genuine joy has reached such a low point. I hope there’s something salvageable in this universe coming soon.
