I am so happy to say that after a series of mediocre films, M Night Shyamalan is back! I had so much fun with this movie. He directed the movie in such a terrifying way and even though it’s not a horror movie at all, it almost makes you feel like it is. He paced, shot and lit the film in a way that is perfectly designed to keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. I am jet-lagged and shouldn’t have been able to pay attention to this movie but from the first minute to the last, it held my attention.
Ariel Donaghue and his daughter Saleka Shyamalan were such revelations for me in this film and played their roles with such realism that I couldn’t believe that one was 14 years old and the latter was giving her film debut. However, this is a Josh Hartnett masterclass. He gives one of the most complex, terrifying and anxiety-inducing performances that I’ve ever seen. His expressions and body language make you more and more tense as the film goes on. You really want the tension to release but it never does and Shyamalan masterfully keeps upping the ante and making you more and more nervous for the wellbeing of all the characters.
I thought there was some cheesy stuff as the film was entering the home stretch but Shyamalan thankfully landed the plane to deliver what I think is one of the best thrillers made in recent times. I highly recommend you check this one out in theaters if you can, cause this is a doozy!
