So tempted to give this an ironic five stars but critical integrity and all that. It’s entertaining for sure, I never got bored at any point. The humor lands half the time, and the other half you laugh cause of how bad the joke is. Jack Black and Jason Momoa are actually ridiculous. It does all the references that itch that nostalgic part of your brain. However, this fails in two main ways. Firstly, it is a bad movie. It is poorly written, paced and the plot almost makes no sense. No character acts or reacts in the way a normal human would and almost nothing has any sensible justification. The other failure, which is the more egregious one in my opinion, is the fact that it really fails to capture the point of Minecraft. For a movie about the death of creativity, it is creatively bankrupt. It removes the joy and wonder of creating things and imaging things. Everything is already built or is built easily. The craft in Minecraft is a labor of love, and that process is simply not captured. Minecraft is as much about the serene moments of silence as you take a look at the small progresses you made as it is about the thrill of running away from a zombie. If Minecraft was a game with no potential, I wouldn’t have this gripe. This could’ve been a survival movie, it could’ve been a movie about making the most you can with limited resources, it could’ve been about creativity. Instead it’s an endless barrage of jokes and gags with no purpose. Even the Mario movie pretended to be about something. Watch this if you enioy the game, you’ll get some joy out of it, but I was so disappointed with what this ended up being.
