If Past Lives made me rethink my conception of a soulmate, then this film made me rethink my whole conception of dating as a concept. On the surface, it is a pretty conventional romantic comedy. It plays into a lot of the tropes. It has extremely attractive leads, a love triangle, wealth disparity and a girl who’s imperfect that has to choose between two impossibly good options. But its so much more, it plays within the structure and follows the well known beats while actively criticizing the whole charade.
I was so incredibly moved by Celine Song’s debut that I came into this with very high expectations. But her sophomore effort is no slump, and left me with so much food for thought. It manages to comment on the internet, on age gaps, on catfishing and height drama while also being extremely critical and holding a lens of darker topics like income inequality, generational trauma and sexual assault. The fact that it manages to be hilarious while also being so sincere is what makes this film work.
Dakota Johnson rarely works for me – I often find her to be a little too ‘in-on-the-joke’ – but here, she’s magnificent. Pedro Pascal is charming and undeniably charismatic as usual. Chris Evans was the real surprise for me though. He manages to be so real and convincing and say lines that would be so cheesy if not delivered perfectly, but you just can’t help but FEEL when he says them. This might be his best performance I’ve ever seen and shows that he has a lot more to offer than being an action lead.
I was just engrossed and completely entranced by the gorgeous world this movie created – the beautiful shots, the great camera angles, the incredible set design, costuming, and the poignant score. This film has it all. I was so impressed by this film, and it is definitely my favorite rom-com of the 2020s so far. I highly recommend you check this one out!
