In an increasingly cynical world, someone who stands for GOOD is always a gamble. How do you do it without it being cheesy or corny? How do you balance being earnest and genuine, but avoid being saccharine and preachy? That’s always been the challenge with Superman. How can someone who stands for truth and justice at any cost be portrayed in an increasingly morally grey and bureaucratic world? James Gunn pulls it off. His Superman is probably the purest and most accurate depiction I can remember of a superhero in a while.
David Corensweat is an insanely inspired choice – he manages to portray the naivety, the boy scout nature and inherent ‘earthy’ quality that’s required to portray Superman and manages to look great doing it. The rest of the cast also does a great job. From the best Lois Lane in years played by Rachel Brosnahan, to a really fun take on Jimmy Olsen by Skyler Gisondo, I was quite impressed across the board. My favorite member of the cast was definitely Nicholas Hoult, he brings a delightful cartoonish villainy to Lex Luthor which Eisenberg’s portrayal really lacked. He’s just a D1 hater and I loved to see that.
The movie is not afraid to say things. It is pretty staunchly against more powerful regimes taking advantage of less fortunate people. It is critical of the military-industrial complex. It has tidbits about the privatization of prisons, immigration and about manifest destiny. At the same time, some of the criticisms are quite on-the-nose and obvious, it’s important that it’s there, especially when corporations are getting more and more afraid to be explicitly political. I found some of the action to be disengaging and Superman’s powerset and strength also seemed to be inconsistent at times. I also feel like the third act could have been a little more fun to watch.
I highly recommend you check this one out in theaters. I haven’t had this much fun in a superhero movie since The Batman in 2022. I haven’t seen someone capture the essence of a character in such a pure and distilled way in a long time and James Gunn’s nearly spotless record gets another great win. If you’re looking for a genuine fun time, check this one out!
