My Top 20 Coldplay Songs

DISCLAIMER – Surprisingly enough, this is my opinion. Music is subjective and I might like something that you don’t, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Coldplay, is my favourite band. And unlike my favourite movie or favourite TV show, this hasn’t changed in almost 9 years now. I remember the first time I heard ‘Fix You’, it changed my life. I have never looked back since. Making this ranking took so long and if I could, I would make a Top 50, but I don’t have the time to write that and you don’t have the time to read that. So here’s my Top 20! I will be linking the related music videos so you can check the song out while reading my article.

20. Up & Up

Album – A Head Full of Dreams

This is a really uplifting and joy-inducing song. I really like the lyrics and the instrumental is also quite mellow and enjoyable. The chorus is extremely catchy and also inspirational!

19. Magic

Album – Ghost Stories

A song from the album which was released at lowest point of Chris Martin’s life, and yet there is a tinge of hope and optimism in this song. It’s also extremely relatable. But the lyrics are also quite thought-provoking yet optimistically melancholic (I know that’s an oxymoron but that’s the perfect way to describe this song).

18. 42

Album – Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends

The lyrics that open this song are bone-chilling. They’re so meaningful and make you think a lot. It reminds you of your mortality and the vulnerability of life. I feel like the songs takes an odd turn at somewhere near the half-way point and it becomes a completely different song, which I found less meaningful which is the only reason it’s lower on this list.

17. Midnight

Album – Ghost Stories

Probably the only song in Coldplay’s discography where Chris Martin uses Auto-tune or such features and I think it’s used brilliantly. It’s a very sad and reflective song. It depicts the feeling of hitting rock-bottom, and the lyrics are simply poetic. They feel like they’ve been ripped from a medieval poem. And the refrain “Leave a light on” makes you understand the incredible melancholy that Chris Martin is facing.

16. Cemeteries of London

Album – Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends

The use of symbolism in this song is incredible. It’s historic accuracy and representation as well as it’s parallels to modern society are incredible. It’s also just a really fun listen, and makes you think about everything just a little bit more. The guitar solo by Guy is also really heart-wrenching. And there’s just one line that comes in the second stanza that makes you really contemplative and reflective.

15. Everyday Life

Album – Everyday Life

The titular song on their latest album is one for the ages. It has such as simple yet effective message and the way it delivers it is simply incredible. The instrumental is just on another level and it makes your bones shudder. The lyrics are so sharp and so beautiful. The message of “Everyone hurts and everyone cries. Everyone tells each other all kinds of lies” is so beautiful and the way it depicts it in this very orchestra-like song is really something that’s worth a listen.
