The Last Dance (2020)

Plot Summary – In the fall of 1997, Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls allowed a film crew to follow them as they went for their sixth NBA title in eight seasons. That resulted in a stunning portrait of one of the sport’s most iconic athletes and a celebrated team. “The Last Dance” follows the Bulls’ 1997-98 season from start to finish, while also covering the rest of the chapters in Jordan’s remarkable career. The 10-part docuseries follows the Jordan timeline from when he was an emerging star on his high school team to becoming a worldwide marketing force and cultural figure. The series takes its name from a phrase coined by then-Bulls coach Phil Jackson, who knew that the season would likely be the final run for the core members of that 1990s Bulls dynasty.

This has got to be one of the best docu-series I’ve ever watched. I’ve been in love with the game of basketball ever since I was 6 and this is such a rewarding experience. I don’t know why I stalled for so long to watch this, because it’s so engrossing and gripping. Micheal Jordan has got to be one of the most interesting and three-dimensional characters in sporting history and covering all these facets of his life without utterly glorifying or vilifying him is such an incredible feat. On top of this, it tells an enthralling and honestly, an inspirational story with this unconventional structure that artistically enhances the experience so much. It doesn’t neglect the supporting cast and players like Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman and Steve Kerr are given their due respect and attention. That’s what I think this docu-series does best, it balances everything perfectly. There’s not a single storyline or narrative that feels overdone or undercooked, everything is perfectly balanced. My only criticism is that in episodes 8 and 9, the structure and pacing gets very helter-skelter and confusing as it’s trying to reach the conclusion but is fumbling on the way. It’s all redeemed in episode 10 which is a slam dunk (hehe). This is a must-watch for any sports fan and everyone can learn something from this docu-series.
