Describing exactly why I loved this film is hard but let me try in this review. I’m really glad my friend recommended this to me because I had a really good time. I had an ongoing argument throughout the film with my elder brother about whether it is satire or not, I’d like to believe that while the central plot in itself is not satire, most of the ornaments around this somewhat aged Christmas tree were immaculate. I was laughing almost throughout the 3-hour runtime and while many of the references to old Bollywood probably went over my head I definitely enjoyed the ones I did understand. The cameos especially in the Filmfare scene (which is probably the funniest scene I’ve seen in a Hindi movie) and the Om Shanti Om song were so fun to catch. The soundtrack of the film was easily one of the best I’ve heard because I already knew all of those songs, just showing how iconic and influential the tracklist of this film was. SRK almost parodies himself in this film and seeing him act with this much creative freedom and self-awareness was so refreshing. Also Deepika (Tulu people OP) was GORGEOUS in this film and I can’t believe that this was her debut because she gives such a nuanced performance as both Shanti and Sandy from Bangalore. While the overall plot is laughable and so lame, I still had an amazing time and I can’t really fault the film because it achieved exactly what it set out to achieve and did it with such perfection. It’s been a while since I’ve had so much care-free FUN watching a film and I know I keep saying that but that’s just the overwhelming feeling I get as I review this film with a huge grin on my face. Feels like a Bollywood Lonely Island film and if you know me, that’s HIGH praise! Farah Khan deliberately or by accident has delivered one of the most enjoyable, entertaining and self-aware films I’ve watched in a long time that openly laughs at the lavish lifestyles and eccentricities of its industry. I genuinely recommend this film, especially if you want something to watch with friends.
this has made me want to rewatch! you’re so right about it feeling like a bollywood lonely island film
