I haven’t had this much fun in theaters in years. Twisters was the breath of fresh air that cinemas needed all year. This is the perfect movie to watch with your friends. There’s so many ‘cheer’ moments, there’s so much fun chemistry and banter and the plot is just a perfect balance of thrill and emotional weight. Daisy Edgar-Jones proves her chops in her ability to lead a movie in a great performance that makes her character instantly likeable.
However, her charm is greatly overpowered by the machine of pure charisma that is Glen Powell. He might be THE modern movie star. From Maverick to Anyone But You he was showing us different roles he can play but this film is his true arrival as one of Hollywood’s most prominent figures. This is one of the all-time lead performances by a male actor, especially in this century. He is the antidote to the rat-boy phenomenon taking over the silver screen. He’s just so good at making you root for him even when his actions are so stupid at times. He makes you care. That’s so rare in our irony-pilled quippy cinematic landscape.
This move wouldn’t be what it was if it weren’t for Lee Isaac-Chung’s direction though. Firstly, the film looks phenomenal. It looks way better than it has any right to and makes the magnitude and feeling of these mega-storms really pack the punch. You feel absolutely riveted throughout by the sheer scale of the film. Secondly, through perfect pacing and clever cinematic tricks he takes this grand story and makes it very personal and rooted. While it does owe a lot to the original, it absolutely stands on its own as a great film. I highly highly recommend you go to theaters, especially with some buddies and check this one out!
