This is literally why cinema exists. Just so that every so often, a movie like this can come around and just be great at everything it touches. Ryan Coogler has not made a bad movie in his career and this is his crowning achievement. What a powerhouse of a film. SO much to say – it comments on racism, cultural appropriation, prejudice, family and so many other complex topics – but it never forgets the most important thing cinema has to achieve – entertainment. This film is wildly entertaining from the first minute to the last. In March last year, I was blown away by Dune 2. This is the closest a film has come to making me feel what I felt in theatres that day.
In glorious IMAX, I got to witness a true masterpiece. Michael B Jordan is off-the-charts in this film, his grasp on both twins and how he subtly portrayed them in different ways was so effective. Hailee Steinfeld continues to be one of the most talented and charming actresses I have seen come up over the last few years. There’s a scene midway through this movie that entranced me like nothing else ever has. I couldn’t believe the sheer scale and poetic nature of what I was witnessing. So much good music – whether it’s diagetic blues bangers or the bone-chilling score.
Yes, it does dive into horrific elements – but I don’t think this is a horror movie by any stretch. Any jumpscare it does have is purely subversive. Coogler masterfully uses the conceit of this film (which I don’t want to spoil if you somehow don’t know yet) to say a great amount about society today, but what I think makes this film so incredible is that almost no two people will be able to completely agree on everything its trying to say. It is incredibly dense, while being extremely fun. This is what they make movies for. Please check this one out in theatres. You will not regret it.
