Surprisingly touching and heartfelt. I haven’t felt this good coming out of a Marvel movie in almost three years. I was growing increasingly nervous that it was unrecoverable for Marvel, and I don’t want to let these positive feelings overwhelm my critical thinking, but sometimes the tenth grader in my head takes over, and I felt a lot of joy during and after watching this film. I think after a lot of swings and misses, Marvel has realized that what used to make their movies successful was characters you can get behind and good villains.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays the role of a dirty politician so well, but that shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone aware of her filmography. Wyatt Russell, Sebastian Stan and David Harbour are all also really entertaining. Florence Pugh was a real standout for me, she shows that she is a top-of-the-line actress with how much depth she brings to her character. Lewis Pullman was a true revelation for me, he absolutely smashed it in a role that asked a lot of him!
The third act of these Marvel films are usually what lead to them going down a notch in my estimation. This film excels here as well, the third act is so unique and differently handled that I was genuinely surprised. It’s been a while since I’ve watched an MCU movie and thought it was something genuinely new. Everything feels so similar and formulaic, and this was a breath of fresh air. The visuals were also so cool and I love what they did with the villain. The post-credit scene made me so hyped and genuinely excited for the future of this franchise. If you’re looking for a fun, entertaining time in theaters that doesn’t take itself too seriously but has a good amount of heart – I would definitely recommend you check this one out!
